The bluest eye excerpt#2(characters)

What does Sigmund Freud’s theory of the ID, ego, and superego have in comparison with Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye”? I believe that characters from the second excerpt we read can each be compared with the ID, ego, or superego. Claudia would be the ID, her peers that adore Maureen are the ego, and Claudia is also the superego. Here are a couple of details to support my thesis.

Claudia being the ID is comparing Freud’s theory with Morrison’s writing first of all because she is doing what fits her. Her ID is telling her to be jealous of Maureen, who was the new girl. She gave in to this demand very easily in my opinion because she immediately started to try and find something wrong with Maureen.

Freud’s theory is further more comparable to this specific part of the story by Claudia’s peers being the superego. They weren’t really mentioned but you can compare them to the superego because they didn’t do things to Maureen that they did to other classmates. They wouldn’t let Claudia do anything to the new girl because they adored her so much.

Last but not least, Freud’s theory and this particular excerpt from “The Bluest Eye” have something in common by Claudia not only being the ID, but the ego also. This is so
because she knew her limits. She knew things would go totally wrong if she messed with Maureen. So since she couldn’t be Maureen’s enemy, she considered being her friend.

In conclusion, There are three things that Sigmund Freud’s (a famous psychologist) theory of the ID, ego, and superego, and an excerpt from Toni Morrison’s (a famous author) the bluest eye have in common. They are that Claudia is indeed the ID and also the ego, and her peers are the superego. Now that you have seen my thesis, what’s yours?
